Chicken Pick-up THIS Saturday 4pm to 5:30pm

Published: Thu, 08/01/13

Hello Farm Friends,

If you have ordered Broiler Chickens for this Saturday, Aug. 3rd, PLEASE CONFIRM BY EMAIL that you will be here between 4:00 and 5:30pm on Saturday to pick-up your birds. Please do not arrive before 4pm because we are not set up to sell by then.  Don't forget to bring your cooler and freezer bags.  Those that are scheduled to help us process broilers, please wear old clothes and be here at 8am.  You can bring a snack for lunch and we should be wrapped up by 4pm.

We still have approximately ten broiler chickens available for the Sept. 7th processing. If you would like to reserve some please email us.

Blackberries are basically finished. What is in the refrigerators is all that is left. There are also some frozen ones in the freezer compartments of the milk refrigerators. These are great for smoothies and cobblers! Come on by and get some of the last of the berries.

Below are a few pictures of the three third generation farmers: Willie, Gabriel, and Joshua doing the heavy lifting for My Dad & Me Farm!

Some of you may have noticed that David and I are making slow but steady progress on the greenhouse. Our hope is to have it completed this fall and ready to house the milk cows during inclement weather.

We have some real nice pork in the freezer. We have some beautiful, boneless pork chops and some Linguicia which is very similar to a Bratwurst. Actually I like them better than Bratwurst! Susan and I have discovered that if you fry the deli ham it tastes like bacon! It also makes a really nice sandwich straight from the package.

Susan has been working on some new signs so you will be able to better identify the products on the back porch.

We would like to thank the Valdez family for their volunteer work at the farm. They have helped us keep berries picked along with Nick as well as keeping the chicken brooders cleaned out and ready for new birds. Their work has proven to be quite a help to the farm!

David has done a great job tweaking his protocol with the broiler chickens in order to raise a nice broiler for all of us. The new chicken tractors, or as our neighbors call them "the chicken condos" , are proving to work substantially better than our previous tractor design. The new tractors are much cooler for the birds. The  organic feed is wonderful but it does require a different protocol to maintain proper weight gain. Broilers are quite a challenge to raise. They don't need much of an excuse to die and so it takes an extreme attention to detail to do it well. David has made quite an art of it. Our hope is  that by year's end we will have established our new methods so that going in to next year we will have a proven model. Farming is quite the challenge. What an exciting way to make a living!

We always enjoy hearing your comments. Feel free to share your thoughts with us about how we can better serve you. Your support of the farm is greatly appreciated.

   See you Saturday!
