Mushrooms, Strawberry Plants, Collards and Chickens

Published: Fri, 10/18/13

Hello Farm Friends,

The mushrooms are doing their final fruiting for the year. Usually the fruiting will last for three to five days so don't miss out on some fresh Shiitake Mushrooms! I had some for breakfast with my eggs and grits.

David and I just got through planting about 1900 organic strawberry plants preparing for the spring season of 2014! We have approximately 50 plants left over for anyone who is interested in planting some. These organic starts are $1 each and will be sold first come first serve. Sorry, no reserves. If you want them come and get them.

Today My Dad & Me Family Farm will begin taking orders for our last chicken processing date of 2013, which is Saturday, November 16. The last processing always fills up quickly with most folks trying to stock up their freezer. We will not be processing again until May of 2014.  You can email us your order and drop us the deposit in the mail or just swing by the farm and fill out a broiler order form.

Collards are beginning to come in now. If you do not see any in the refrigerator feel free to ring the bell and we will be glad to pick you some. We have some wonderful ham hocks in the freezer that go really well when cooked with the collards. We also have planted broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage. It will be another 4-5 weeks before these will be ready.

David and I have been busy planting winter rye grass for the cows. This provides excellent forage for making very high quality milk and on top of that the cows love it! Our biggest job is keeping the girls happy so that they make wonderful grass fed milk.

This is Harmony, a future milker that is headed to the Huff Farm in just a few weeks.

Buttermilk is due to have her calf today so in about a week we should have plenty of extra milk, just in time for the holidays.

Anna made a wonderful Shrimp Bisque which is a cream and broth based chowder and it was delicious! I'll get Anna to get some copies of the recipe so everybody can try it. We had it over a bed of rice and she stretched the shrimp with some chicken and it worked great.

Susan has some more kefir grains for anyone interested in wonderful gut bacteria! Did you know that a healthy gut has over six pounds of bacteria? Kefir is a great way keep it populated with the good stuff!

I would like to share a video that is well worth watching. I appreciate Ray Comfort's ministry for the Lord Jesus and this video is very enlightening.

Hope to see y'all soon,
