Hello Farm Friends, April is nearly here! The soil has already begun to warm up with the springtime sun. It is time to collect plant starts for the vegetable garden. Planting, watering, hoeing, weeding are priceless ways to involve the whole family in outdoor projects.
The ability to produce one's own food is a joy and children are never too young to
participate. Oftentimes, the lessons they learn from working a small plot of ground as a child yields fruit for a lifetime. Instead of looking to big agriculture and their pseudo foodstuffs, our little ones can learn to rely on God's provision of nature as their means for real food. It is really surprising how little space is needed to produce enough food for one family. So grab a shovel and let's get started!
Approximately 6 weeks ago, we began sowing seeds in our greenhouse. We used the very best certified organic potting soil from New Country Organics and the
plants are strong & vibrant and only $6 each. Today, these vegetable plants are being offered for sale, but please resist the temptation to transplant them to the garden until April 15th. This is our average last frost date for Cobb County and we seem to always see a last minute frost.
This year My Dad & Me has five varieties of tomatoes,
two kinds of peppers as well as squash, butternut, watermelon, pumpkin, zucchini, and okra. Farm friends, along with all of you who follow our emails, are welcome to come purchase plants. Stop by the farm today while the pickin's good! Our son-in-law, Jake, and our daughter, Rebekah, had their third child early Monday morning. Caleb Robert Jenkins weighed in at 9lbs 8oz. Mother and
son are doing great. Thank you all for your prayers. Rebekah was 3 weeks late, but the extra incubation proved to be a blessing with plenty of extra weight to sustain Caleb until mama's milk comes in. That makes 7 grands for Susan and I: Willie, Gabriel, Joshua, Ellie, Susie, Hannah Kate, and our newest arrival, Caleb!
David helped deliver our first Jersey addition to My Dad
& Me Alabama around 9pm last night. JoAnn had a healthy bull calf that David named Jerry and everyone in the barn is excited about the new arrival. Jerseys are great mothers at heart, and if given a chance, they will steal a calf from it's birth
mother as if it were their very own. For this reason, mother and baby get segregated from the herd until they build a bond that is strong enough to stand up to a herd of baby thieves. Midnight, our resident farm cat, avid hunter, and farm friend charmer, is due to deliver kittens
any day now. We are now taking deposits on kittens ($30 each) that should be ready in approximately six weeks. If you would like pick of the litter, drop by the farm and stake your claim. Thank you for choosing My Dad & Me Family Farm Georgia and Alabama for your healthy
food.
See you soon at the farm,
Daniel, Susan, & Anna David, Tina, Willie, & Ellie
